Avila and Segovia Tour

Overview

What is better than visiting a UNESCO world heritage site? Visiting two. With a trip to both Ávila and Segovia, an easy day trip from Madrid, you can experience a depth of history that very few places in the world could match. On this full day tour with Through Eternity you can experience both cities in comfort, while making the most of your day in the company of one of our expert guides.

Description

This full day tour is an in depth look at two very impressive sites with time for lunch halfway through the day. Our tour covers the Roman city of Segovia and its famous cathedral and castle. Following that we pause for lunch to sample some specialities of the region. After lunch it is a short drive to the medieval walls and streets of Ávila. At the end of the day we will bring you back to the center of Madrid. All this is included as well as the expert help of your Through Eternity guide.

Some highlights of your tour with Through Eternity include:

Segovia

Segovia is famed for its ancient Roman history, with its magnificent aqueduct greeting you as you enter the town. Perhaps the most famous Roman monument in Spain, it is an elegant and impressive reminder of the glory of the Roman Empire, built at the height of its power and opulence. With one of the most impressive gothic cathedrals in Spain dominating the skyline with the castle atop the hill. The castle or alcazar of Segovia is one of the most dramatic and impressive not just in Spain but in all of Europe. Home to nobility and kings, its history is fascinating inside and out and with your guide you can explore it all.

Lunch in Spanish style

It would be a shame to visit this part of Spain and not sample some local delicacies. The area is well known for its Cochinillo or roasted suckling pig. The region is blessed to have some beautiful agricultural villages around that provide some delicious traditional ingredients. These include Judiones de la Granja, a sort of large bean usually served in a stew with chorizo. The chorizo from the village and townland of Cantimpallo is renowned all over Spain and in a region that gets cold in the winter time, the fiery sausage is sure to warm the cockles. Finish it off with Ponche Segoviano, a layered sponge cake covered in delicious marzipan. All this can be discovered with your guide on our trip to Ávila and Segovia.

Ávila

With some of the most impressive medieval walls to be found in Spain, Ávila is a step back in time. Awash of churches and ancient buildings it has been inhabited from perhaps the 5th century B.C.E. It has maze like streets and is a perfect compliment to Segovia. It was home to St Teresa of Ávila, the monastic reformer and mystic, who was immortalised in Rome by Gianlorenzo Bernini with his famous statue of St Teresa in Ecstasy (visit it with Through Eternity when you are in Rome!). After visiting this historic town with our expert guide head back to Madrid in comfort for a well earned rest, or maybe some more tapas.
