duration 1,5 hours

Tour Overview

Join local guide Andrea on a virtual journey into the mysterious world of the Phlegraean Fields, an area rich in fascinating history, ancient mythology and extraordinary natural beauty not far from Naples. A highly volcanic area related to nearby Mount Vesuvius, the Campi Flegrei (literally the Burning Fields) is actually a massive volcano composed of 24 separate craters. Massive eruptions dating as far back as 39000 years ago have carved out this unique landscape, a landscape that ancient Roman legends situated as the entrance to hell itself. Here too is the mysterious Lake Avernus, a dark and lifeless lake where classical texts recounted that even birds feared to fly over, as well as the Cave of the Sibyl where according to legend the ancient seer predicted the future to the hero Aeneas. The Phlegraean Fields was also where important Roman aristocrats and senators built their luxurious summer homes, and we’ll be virtually exploring the stunning ancient cities of Pozzuoli, Baia and Cumae on our online tour. The Campi Flegrei is a fascinating and beautiful corner of Italy that few tourists ever get to see - join Andrea on our virtual tour today to get the full story!

Tour Description

Meet your guide: Andrea

Hi I’m Andrea! A native of Naples, I’ve lived in the Campania region of Italy all my life, and I have a deep love for its art, archeology, music, architecture, cuisine, natural beauty and - of course - its people. I have shared this world with many, many visitors over the years, showcasing the vast range of this wonderful place. When I was 14 years old I started working as an actor in theatres, and this plays a central role in how I communicate on my tours today -  I always try to put something theatrical into everything I do :-)

This is my 3rd virtual tour with Andrea. He is a native Neapolitan and is extremely knowledgeable, and very passionate! I learned so much about the Phlegrean Fields and the surrounding area. Can't wait to go take some Through Eternity tours in person next year. I highly recommend!

The province of Campania is rich in geography and history, and this tour is another eye opener as to just how rich. Andrea introduces us to the geology and civilization that are both bubbling under the surface and spilling over. Living with the constant presence of a volcanic land is embedded in the people of the area, both in the present and in ancient times. This tour was fascinating as Andrea led us through the how the ancients explained their surroundings in myth, how they lived, and the amazing remains of their villas and towns.
