Discover the splendours of Italy's incredible royal palace on our virtual tour of the Reggio di Caserta

Caserta Virtual Tour: Italy's Opulent Royal Palace

duration 1.5 hours

Tour Overview

The Royal Palace of Caserta, or Reggia di Caserta, is one of the must-see sights in the southern Italian region of Campania. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built as a magnificent regal palace designed to rival Versailles, and is one of the largest royal residences in the world. Discover this opulent world of extraordinary luxury on our virtual tour of Caserta, and explore its stunning park studded with ornamental fountains and pools fed by a nearby aqueduct. Extending over 11 acres, the garden's pools, fountains and cascades are aligned through an ingenious 'telescope effect’,which makes them appear as if they continue for as far as the eye can see. The villa itself meanwhile is a dazzling array of grand halls, sweeping staircases and glitzy dining rooms. Designed by the famed 18th-century architect and engineer Luigi Vanvitelli, the Royal Palace boasts over 1,200 opulent rooms, each decorated with intricate ceiling frescoes, inlaid marble detailing and gold-leaf. Surprisingly still not a feature on most tourist itineraries, our virtual tour is the perfect introduction to one of Italy’s most spectacular hidden gems. Book your place today!

Tour Description

Meet your guide: Andrea

Hi I’m Andrea! A native of Naples, I’ve lived in the Campania region of Italy all my life, and I have a deep love for its art, archeology, music, architecture, cuisine, natural beauty and - of course - its people. I have shared this world with many, many visitors over the years, showcasing the vast range of this wonderful place. When I was 14 years old I started working as an actor in theatres, and this plays a central role in how I communicate on my tours today -  I always try to put something theatrical into everything I do :-)

I've taken a lot of Through Eternity's virtual tours (as well as a few of their in-person tours before the pandemic began) and most of their virtual tours are of places that I have either visited in person or already know that I want to visit someday. But Reggia di Caserta is somewhere that I knew pretty much nothing about before taking this tour. Andrea mixes royal history, regional history, architecture, material culture, and art on a fascinating tour of the public parts of the former royal palace and its gardens. I took this tour the second week it was offered and was lucky enough to be on it alone, and Andrea patiently answered my questions. I wish that one of the things I asked about - the former servants' quarters and their work spaces such as the kitchen - were at least partially open to the public as I think it would be interesting to see them in addition to the royal family's living quarters, but so many historic sites in Europe seem to think that visitors will only be interested in the royal sections. Regardless, this is an excellent tour about a lesser-known site a bit out from Naples that ended with me wanting to visit it someday, and I would recommend it both for people who are considering visiting and for people who are generally interested in Italian and European history and art.

I'm sure that the Palace at Caserta is not known to many tourists. I had heard about this place from my father (who was born in Italy) and he often speaks about how vast and amazing the palace and gardens were when he visited many many years ago. Despite trying to visit this location on my trip to Italy last year with family we just couldn't fit it into our itinerary and I was incredibly disappointed. When I saw that Andrea had created a virtual tour on such a unique and important historical landmark I was thrilled! Andrea provided a great history and general overview of the palace and gardens with enthusiasm and answered the vast array of questions the participants had with humour and ease. I appreciate how much effort Andrea puts into his tours...it makes you want to tell your friends about everything you've just learned about such wonderful and obscure places. Grazie!
