Tour Description

Meet your guide: Rob

Hi I’m Rob, co-founder and president of Through Eternity Tours. Born in Montreal, Canada and raised in Stamford, Connecticut, I’ve had the good fortune of living in Rome for the past 20 years. I hold a Bachelor of Arts, and before coming to Rome worked in the travel division of American Express. Arriving in Rome on a backpacking trip through Europe in the late 90s, I’ve never left! I founded a small tour guide business in the hope of sharing my passion for the city, and over the last 2 decades Through Eternity has developed into one of the most successful walking tour companies in Italy. A licensed tour guide of Rome myself, I only work with the most knowledgeable and personable guides out there, whose storytelling abilities can make Rome come alive for our clients.

Discover the treasures of St. Peter's from the comfort of your own home

The magnificent St. Peter’s basilica is the world’s ultimate Christian pilgrimage destination. One of the grandest construction projects ever attempted in the Renaissance, St. Peter’s took over 120 years to build. At over 190 metres long and with a dome soaring 136 metres above the floor, it’s still the largest church anywhere on earth, capable of holding fully 60,000 worshippers. Today, however, St. Peter’s lies empty, and on our virtual tour we’ll have the awe-inspiring basilica all to ourselves.

On this live online experience, Rob will unravel the fascinating story of St. Peter’s and the Vatican. Discover how the original Constantinian basilica was built over the site of the emperor Nero’s ancient circus, legendary site of the apostle’s martyrdom. You’ll learn how the venerable old church fell into disrepair in the 16th century, and get the inside track on the construction of the extraordinary church that was to take its place – including Michelangelo’s awe-inspiring dome.

Making our virtual way through iconic St. Peter’s square, find out why an ancient Egyptian obelisk stands at the centre of the piazza and the symbolism of the sweeping marble colonnades that funnel the faithful towards the massive basilica.

We’ll also be learning all about the fabulous artworks that adorn St. Peter's glittering interior. Examine Michelangelo’s beautifully moving Pietà, and discover how the young sculptor’s first Roman commission was to make his name. Over the course of our online St. Peter’s tour you’ll also be introduced to Baroque master Gianlorenzo Bernini. Discover how the basilica stands as lasting testament to his genius as Rob gives you the full story behind his immense sculptures and what is perhaps the artist’s greatest creation: the awe-inspiring bronze baldacchino that soars above the basilica’s high altar, marking the grave of St. Peter himself.

No story of Western culture can be told without St. Peter’s. Join Rob on this online journey to the heart of the Christian faith and discover why the basilica is one of the world’s great treasure troves of art.

Rob does an amazing job of explaining the events and history of Christianity's rise in the world, focusing on Rome. The building of St. Peter's basilica is rooted in the pagan religions of the time including the architecture, the geography, and the events of Peter's life. I thoroughly enjoyed his entertaining presentation and am looking forward to part 2.
