Your day begins in Montepulciano, a medieval hilltop town celebrated for its Nobile di Montepulciano, one of Italy’s oldest and most esteemed wines. Stroll through the cobblestone streets, where history comes alive in landmarks like Piazza Grande, framed by Renaissance palaces and the Cathedral of the Assumption. Just outside the town, the Temple of San Biagio rises in serene splendor, a perfect example of Tuscan Renaissance architecture. At the winery, learn about the meticulous craft of winemaking, from the Prugnolo Gentile grapes to the aging process that creates this robust and elegant wine.

In the afternoon, the tour continues to Pienza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an ideal Renaissance city envisioned by Pope Pius II. Its harmonious design unfolds in Piazza Pio II, home to the majestic Duomo and Palazzo Piccolomini. Wander through quaint alleys and discover artisan shops offering the town’s famous pecorino cheese, or "il Cacio." This celebrated cheese is the star ingredient in Pici Cacio e Pepe (Cheese and Pepper Pasta), a traditional fresh pasta dish from the Val d’Orcia. In this charming village, you’ll find numerous small shops selling a variety of pecorino cheeses, alongside other local specialties like wines from the Crete Senesi, honey, pici pasta, and more.

The Temple of San Biagio in Montepulciano

A short distance from Montepulciano’s bustling center, we move toward the serene Temple of San Biagio, an architectural marvel nestled amid lush fields. Designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, this Renaissance gem captivates with its symmetrical beauty and tranquil surroundings. Its golden travertine facade glows in the Tuscan sun, inviting visitors to pause and marvel at its harmonious design. Whether you are an architecture enthusiast or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this sanctuary offers an unforgettable experience.

Piazza Pio II and Palazzo Piccolomini

Continuing to Pienza, we arrive at the heart of the town: Piazza Pio II, a masterpiece of Renaissance urban planning. This elegant square, framed by honey-colored travertine buildings, embodies the vision of Pope Pius II. Dominating the scene is the Palazzo Piccolomini, his summer residence. Inside, the beautifully preserved rooms provide a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the time. Don’t miss the hanging gardens, where sweeping views of the Val d’Orcia create a breathtaking backdrop to this architectural wonder.

Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta

Adjacent to Piazza Pio II stands the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, a symbol of Pienza’s Renaissance glory and a near replica of Florence’s Palazzo della Signoria. Its travertine facade, divided into two sections by a simple cornice, reflects an understated elegance. Inside, the cathedral is divided into three equally tall naves, creating a sense of harmony. Highlights include Vecchietta’s Assumption of the Virgin and Matteo di Giovanni’s Madonna and Child with Saints, masterpieces that bring the space to life. The blend of spiritual and artistic elements makes this a must-visit destination.

Diocesan Museum of Pienza (Borgia Palace)

Located within the historic Palazzo Borgia, the Museo Diocesano offers a treasure trove of religious art and artifacts. Spread across 11 meticulously curated rooms, the collection showcases masterpieces from the Sienese school, including Pietro Lorenzetti’s Madonna di Monticchiello and Bartolo di Fredi’s Madonna della Misericordia. The museum’s crown jewel is the Piviale di Pio II, an exquisitely embroidered liturgical vestment, highlighting the enlightened patronage of Pope Pius II. This cultural gem offers a fascinating glimpse into the artistic and spiritual heritage of Pienza.

Museo Civico Pinacoteca Crociani in Montepulciano

A short drive brings us to Montepulciano’s Museo Civico, housed in the 14th-century Palazzo Neri Orselli. Here, the Pinacoteca Crociani displays a rich collection of paintings spanning the 14th to 19th centuries. Highlights include works from the Sienese, Florentine, and Flemish schools, such as Vecchietta’s Madonna and Saints, and stunning pieces by Prospero Fontana and Cristoforo Munari. The museum also features rare Della Robbia terracottas and a fascinating archaeological section with Etruscan and Roman artifacts.
